April Fools Online

On March 29th, 60 Minutes aired a segment on Internet hackers and worms called “The Internet Is Infected.” The entirety of that segment is embedded here. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend you watch now.

Please make sure your antivirus software is updating daily, or at minumum, weekly. Don’t be an online fool and let your updates subscription expire and think you’ll be safe. We’ve seen virus/worm alerts pop up for pages on eBay, Excite, MSN Hotmail, and other trusted sites. It might be just one malicious image, or an advertisement, or some script code on the page that was placed there by a self-propagating worm. We’ve also seen email forgeries that look like they come from legitimate companies, but they don’t and they carry a nasty payload. You don’t need to worry, you just need to UPDATE your software at daily or weekly intervals.

Most software underlying the majority of successful Internet businesses is free!

In March 2009, anyone thinking of starting an internet business might reasonably start with a Google search for “internet business software” to investigate the options for the underlying software that will power their new global business. It might seem like a logical place to start, but you really need to consult with an internet business professional that is not reselling the software they recommend.

We’re big believers in open source software. The best of it undergoes constant improvement and updates by dedicated programmers. Various flavors of unix, linux and apache web server power most of the internet. It does it’s work in the background like the electricity in your house — it’s always running and you don’t have to think about it. And best of all, it’s free!

The open source software we most often recommend powers major e-commerce sites (online stores), news publishing sites, and social sites which are all the rage right now. We’ve spent a lot of time researching and testing software for it’s ease of use, wealth of features, reliability and security. And when we’re convinced it’s a winner, we recommend it to our clients.

Now sometimes our clients have special needs that only commercial software will meet. In that case, we guide them to the software and contract with an expert to install and service the client on an ongoing basis. But we’ve found our client’s rarely need commercial software and are quite satisfied once they learn the capabilities and features of the open source alternatives.

African Movie Star is powered by Wordpress, a popular open source publishing program.

AfricanMovieStar.com is powered by Wordpress, a popular open source publishing program. Launched in June 2008, African Movie Star is growing in popularity and prestige for it’s unique and exclusive coverage of Nollywood movies and movie stars in Africa. The publisher is located here in Charlotte, NC while staff writers live in Africa. This dream business would not have been possible only a few years ago.

TanBedLotions.comAnother client launched an e-commerce site in 2008 powered by Zen Cart software. The open source software allowed the business owner to start selling tanning lotions online at a competitive price point that keeps the business viable.

Making the Best CD Cover in Charlotte in 2007

Winner of Best CD Cover at 2007 Charlotte Music Awards

SwampdaWamp: Winner of Best CD Cover at the 2007 Charlotte Music Awards

Gig Michaels, lead singer of SwampdaWamp, contacted 3-Dreams Media in the summer of 2006 to create a web site for his newly formed band. At our initial meeting, he played his demo songs for me as musicians like to do in order to get me to believe in his dream and, thus, give him a price break on both the CD art and the website.

That’s typically how it works with new bands. They want their photographers and artists to believe that they’ll make it big with their music and they’ll either bring you along for more highly paid work with their suddenly-famous band or at least you’ll have a claim to fame by having worked with them.

The fact of the matter is that very few aspiring bands actually get famous so working for future considerations with musicians is generally not financially rewarding. But we took on the project because we really liked the songs and thought the music was some of the best southern rock to come out in a long time.

SwampdaWamp LogoOur first step was to create a band logo — an identity that the band could use that was instantly recognizable. Being a Yes fan, I’ve always liked Yes’ consistent use of the classic Yes logo and artwork of Roger Dean. We knew we could create an identity that appropriately reflected a southern blues rock style appropriate for a band named SwampdaWamp.

SwampdaWamp Cover version 1

Once we had the logo, we started work on the CD art. Based on conversations with the band, we created a cover with the logo coming out of a foggy swamp. In the swamp was what appeared to be a rock until you opened the CD, where a really big gator would be revealed. This was the cover until the band made a deal with producer Joe Boyland in Nashville to produce and re-record their debut CD. Joe thought the cover was not colorful enough to attract buyers’ attention. So we went back to the drawing board, literally.

Artist Jee An began drawing a colorful Peter Max inspired swamp springing out of the logo. As we moved forward on the project, the producer and band kept tossing us their ideas and asking for changes in the art and direction long before it was finished. As it changed and evolved, the print deadline was getting ever closer. They loved the art, but kept Jee busy making requested changes and trying new backgrounds right up until the deadline. When we finally settled on it a week before the print deadline, the producer decided that he just wanted theĀ  logo over a bright background on the cover. And he wanted changes in the logo which he defined. So the artwork designed for the cover went on the inside of the CD.

Personally, I think the artwork on the inside made the best cover. But the band and the producer were quite happy when they won the 2007 Best CD Cover at the inaugural Charlotte Music Awards. And, yes, we were happy too.

Creativity, Dreams and Thoughts

We spend a lot of time creating, writing, designing, shooting, editing, photographing, and other creative endeavors, so we talk and think about creativity, dreams, and ideas quite a bit.

Prior to launching this blog, we had links exploring these topics on our main site and a forum dedicated to discussions of creativity, dreams, and consciousness. Not surprisingly, keeping up the forums required constant monitoring to keep out the spammers (the software wasn’t quite up to the task back then).

Ultimately, we discontinued the forums and moved our links here hopefully to stimulate some creative comments and discussions, but at least to keep them available to the visitors still searching for dream analysis and discussion, creativity development, and consciousness studies. You’ll find those pages and links under the DreamWorld tab, where we hope to continue building great links and discussions of the aforementioned topics. So if you’re interested, please check it out and get involved!
